New Volt electric car makes it to Danville - WSLS

By: Tara Bozick
Published: September 18, 2011 »  Comments | Post a Comment Danville finally got its first Chevrolet Volt on Monday.

Residents ask about the electric car when Robert Woodall drives the “crystal red” demonstration vehicle around town.

It takes him four hours to charge it up with a 240-volt charger at the Chevrolet division of Woodall Auto Mall.

“There’s no doubt it’s the wave of the future,” he said, adding a tremendous amount of research and money went into developing the Volt.

The Volt already claimed many awards and honors, including the “2011 World Green Car of the Year” and making Car and Driver’s “10 Best for 2011.” It’s currently nominated for the 2012 World Car of the Year.

The Woodall dealership already trained the technicians to work on the cars that have an electric motor and gasoline generator. Woodall said the vehicle performs like gasoline engine cars and can accelerate to 60 mph in nine seconds.

The battery provides 35 miles of driving, and then the generator powered by a gasoline engine turns on. The roof has a solar panel in it to run some electronics like the radio.

Every car comes with a 110-volt charger, which takes eight hours to fully charge the car.

Woodall understands the Volt, starting out at $39,000, targets niche customers who are interested in technology or the environment. The demonstration car, which is fully loaded, is $45,000.

Yet, a $7,500 tax credit could help mitigate the cost, in addition to an estimated $7,600 in fuel savings over five years, according to the manufacturer.

Other larger cities received the Volt about eight months ago. Woodall ordered several more that he hopes will arrive within 60 days. He anticipates sales won’t really get going until next year, and he projects selling about 50 to 60 Volts a year after that.

He understands the concerns about range, but knows many Danvillians may not travel that far in one day. Then, the gasoline lasts for another 344 miles. Woodall also anticipates the charging infrastructure would develop as electric vehicles catch on.

“It will come over time,” Woodall said.

Squeegees return as New York City is awash in windshield swipers in sign of ... - New York Daily News

Windshield washer gives car a good swipe on Sunday - a sight seldom seen since 1990s. Windshield washer gives car a good swipe on Sunday - a sight seldom seen since 1990s.

Squeegee men, the aggressive panhandlers who wash your car windows whether you want them to or not, are back.

Armed with buckets and $5 squeegees, a squad of men waded into stalled Times Square traffic Sunday to lather up windshields, swipe them clean and beckon for tips from drivers - some annoyed by the intrusion.

A rare sight when the country's unemployment rate was a mere 5.7%, the reappearance of the crews is an in-your-windshield reminder of 9%-plus unemployment and the highest rate of poverty in 27 years.

For some, they're a powerful symbol that the busted economy is bringing back the bad old days.

"I'm walking and I see a man cleaning a car window. It took me back in time. I had to do a double take to make sure I was seeing right," said Reggie Thomas, 44.

The Daily News spotted a crew of five squeegee men at 42nd St. and Ninth Ave. Sunday, swarming cars like it was the late 1980s all over again.

"As a driver, I feel obligated," said Terry Harris, 56, of the upper West Side, whose car the men approached. "I say 'no' when they approach my car, but then you feel guilty. They are here because they need the money."

A member of the squeegee brigade, James, of Harlem, said desperate times call for desperate measures.

"We are out here making a living," said James, a father of three. "It's hard to get a job," he added as he hustled from car to car, accepting $1 to $2 for his work.

He said he was laid off from his most recent job in the produce department of a grocery store when his manager learned he had a felony rap for robbery stemming back to when "I was young and made mistakes."

Sheila, 38, said her husband was slinging a squeegee because it's better than selling drugs.

"I have uterus cancer. He's here because welfare and Medicaid don't cover everything," she said. "He doesn't come here every day. But he needs to get extra money."

She insisted her husband would prefer a steady job to a life that's just above street beggar.

"The city isn't doing anything to help these men get jobs," Sheila said. "The city chases them away and harasses them instead of helping them get work. We got no other place to go but here, making money out in the streets."

Back in the early 1990s, the city's unemployment rate topped 13%, and the number of squeegee men ballooned into a symbol of New York's moral decay.

After taking office in 1994, Mayor Rudy Giuliani targeted squeegee men, whose tactics, some said, bordered on extortion.

Nearly two decades later, squeegee men are still paying for the sins of their forerunners, said James.

"The cops come and they chase us," James said. "We run. They don't want us doing this. We are just trying to make a living and bringing food to our kids."

The Worse the Economy, the Better Business Is at Auto Repair Shops - TIME

Sam Jordash / Getty Images

The “new normal” among consumers is to make due with automobiles long after they’ve lost that new car smell. Plenty of drivers plan on sticking with their aging cars well past the six-figure mileage marker, until they can’t be driven any more. That’s bad news for automakers and car dealerships, but has spelled rising revenues for mechanics and auto repair shops in the business of keeping old clunkers on the road.

Drivers just aren’t buying new cars like they used to. Last year, the vast majority of car owners said they planned on hanging onto their current vehicles for at least 50,000 more miles than their previous automobiles. Especially high auto prices over the past several months have also caused would-be car buyers to hold off on making purchases until better deals arrive.

Naturally, while consumers have prudently been avoiding big-ticket new car purchases, they’ve been more likely to spend smaller amounts in order to keep their old rides plugging along. The trend has meant that while most businesses have struggled through the past few years, auto repair shops have never been busier.

(MORE: Just How Much Are You Getting Ripped Off at the Car Dealership Service Department?)

The Los Angeles Times reports:

Last year, auto repair garages in the U.S. reported $36 billion in sales, according to estimates from the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association. That’s up 10.5% from 2007.

Sales figures at auto repair shops are expected to rise another 5% this year.

In the same way that thrift stores are doing brisk business because consumers are less likely to be buying new clothes and home furnishings lately, garages specializing in repairs have been booming because consumers have been holding off on buying new cars. Americans bought around 16 million automobiles annually between 1999 and 2007. But in 2009, dealerships sold only 10.4 million new cars as unemployment remained stubbornly high and consumers sought ways to avoid large purchases. Sales remain slow this year, with 12.5 million new vehicles expected to be purchased by the end of 2011.

(MORE: The Sad, Sorry State of the Middle Class)

So long as economic growth remains stifled and drivers keep trying to get by with “good enough” vehicles rather than feeling the need for spotless, scratch-free, brand-spanking new cars, it should continue being a great time to be in the auto repair business.

Old, new wheels shine at Pa. car show - The Herald-Mail

Rouzerville car show Dylan Morgan, 6, of Waynesboro, Pa., looks at a 1964 Chevy Impala SS with his grandfather, Darrell Morgan, during the Cumberland Valley Rod & Custom Car Club car show Sunday in Rouzerville, Pa. (By C.J. Lovelace/Staff Writer)

Dave George bought his 1966 Dodge Coronet brand new at the former Central Motors Dodge of Hagerstown in 1966.

In the 45 years since, Central Motors, the oldest continuously run Dodge dealer in the nation until 1996, lost value and ultimately closed, but George’s merchandise has appreciated in value.

George, of Waynesboro, Pa., said he bought the car for $3,900 in 1966, and has only logged 32,000 miles on it. It still sports a showroom shine with the original 426 Hemi powerplant under the hood.

“It wouldn’t be worth as much as it is now without that motor,” George said.

George’s Coronet was one of about 215 cars on display Sunday afternoon at Red Run Park during the Cumberland Valley Rod & Custom Car Club car show, now in its 23rd year.

Club President Bob Ridenour said vehicles of all makes and models began rolling in around 7:30 a.m. for the show, which was from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The club donates the proceeds of the event back to the park, he said.

“We give it to Washington Township and they put it right back in,” Ridenour said. “Our money helped to build a bathroom (at the park). We’ve built swings; they have our name on it. We’ve been doing this in the park here for 23 years.”

Hundreds were walking around at the show at about noon Sunday, checking out entries and visiting vendor stands. The show had a little bit of everything, including cars dating to the early 1920s, muscle cars from the mid-1960s and ’70s, and even a couple of trucks and imports.

“Bob puts on a really nice show and it goes to a great cause,” George said. “It’s such a nice setting and it’s a wonderful day.”

Darrell Morgan of Pittsburgh looked under the hood of a 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS with his grandson, Dylan Morgan, 6, of Waynesboro, Pa. Darrell Morgan said he was visiting family for the weekend and decided to attend the show after seeing it at the park, just off Pa. 16.

“I think it’s really nice,” he said. “They have a lot of vehicles.”

Nearby, Art Coldsmith of Shippensburg, Pa., and his 16-year-old son, Nathan, sat behind their fully restored 1967 Ford Mustang. It was their second time showing the car, which took about two years to complete.

“When we got that car, it was really trashed out. The floorboards were shot. It had the six-cylinder in it. We just totally stripped the car completely down,” Art Coldsmith said. “We just got it done about a month ago and got it on the road.”

The Coldsmiths bought an old Ford truck with a 351 Windsor V8 motor that they rebuilt into the new engine for the bright red car. A brand new drivetrain — complete with a 9-inch rear end — runs beneath the refurbished floorboards.

“There were times doing it where we were like, ‘What did we get ourselves into?’ We had parts all over the place and it was our first time doing it … it was quite a challenge,” Art Coldsmith said. “It’s gratifying now sitting here.”

Art Coldsmith, who works as a logger, said his son has paid the bill for almost the entire project, about $20,000, by selling firewood on the side since Nathan decided he wanted to restore his first car when he was 14.

“I learned a lot doing this,” Nathan Coldsmith said.

Each show entrant received a voting ballot and the top 40 cars won trophies, Ridenour said.

Upcoming event

The Cumberland Valley Rod & Custom Car Club is sponsoring an event in October to benefit needy families in the area around the holidays, club President Bob Ridenour said.

The 21st annual Jack Frost Charity show and toy run will take place Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Waynesboro (Pa.) Mall parking lot. The cost to enter is a $5 donation or a new toy. Santa Claus will make an appearance at about 2:15 p.m., Ridenour said.

For a Governor Partial to Corvettes, a Chance to Indulge His Inner Gearhead - New York Times

He showed a clear weakness for Corvettes, particularly those with their hoods propped open. He admired the elongated quarter panel of a 1969 Buick Electra and a salmon-colored racing stripe on a black late-model Ford Mustang. He was so smitten at times that he ignored signs imploring visitors to look but not touch.

Only up close, when a small entourage of photographers and plainclothes state troopers came into view, was it clear that this was not any ordinary gearhead, but New York’s gearhead in chief: Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

And Mr. Cuomo, car-obsessed ever since his teenage days working at a gas station in Hollis, Queens, was in his element, moving along row after row of muscle cars and peppering their owners with questions. “I’m having a ball,” he declared, and the hour he spent inspecting car after car lined up in a park here left little doubt.

Sunday was one of those days when Mr. Cuomo waved off his State Police driver and got behind the wheel: first, to drive from his Westchester County home to a breakfast in Harlem honoring the African American Day Parade, where he gave a speech about gun violence, and then to Eisenhower Park here, for Nassau County’s car show, in its second year.

He all but apologized for his own ride — a deep sky-blue 1975 model that he bought for $4,750 while in college — saying it was nothing compared with most at the show. “I use it — it’s not a show car by any means,” he said. “I leave it in a parking lot, so the car isn’t as clean as these cars. It’s far from perfect.”

Mr. Cuomo parked next to a gold 1969 Corvette, owned by another politician and car buff — the Nassau County executive, Edward P. Mangano, a Republican. Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, gushed about Mr. Mangano’s car, calling it “something you pass on generation to generation.” For a while, the two men huddled over the engine of Mr. Cuomo’s Corvette, sharing tips on cleaning grime from the engine manifold (Mr. Cuomo touched his up with a paintbrush, an idea Mr. Mangano found intriguing).

In brief remarks, Mr. Cuomo — clutching a trophy that Mr. Mangano awarded him for having the best, if only, gubernatorial Corvette at the show — said he spent three hours on Saturday changing the oil in his car and cleaning it.

“I’m all sore today,” he told the crowd. “I’m all cramped from moving around the car. But it is a great passion. It’s a great hobby.”

He proceeded to tell the story of his car. “I look at that car now and I smile, sometimes — the memories of days gone by,” he said. Then, playfully, he added: “There’s no back seat in the Corvette, so that’s not where it is.”

Mr. Cuomo, in a pink short-sleeve button-up shirt and chinos, was in a jocular mood: he punctuated his remarks by telling the crowd that after getting Republicans and Democrats to work together in Albany this year, he planned to raise the bar and “try to get G.M. guys and Ford guys to work together.”

On a blustery September day, Mr. Cuomo went up and down the rows of cars, defying the playbook of the politician photo op: instead of posing for a picture or two and then being whisked out of public view, the governor kept going and going, turning after each row of cars and pressing on, intent on surveying more.

Mr. Cuomo spotted a black 1968 Pontiac GTO, the same model that Mr. Cuomo owns and is using to teach his twin 16-year-old daughters how to drive — a task that the governor said remained a “work in progress.” Mr. Cuomo deemed the car at the show to be “magnificent,” much to the delight of its owner, Joe Iannarelli, 49, who lives in Oceanside and owns an auto-repair shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “I turned around and saw him, and I was blown away,” Mr. Iannarelli said. “It made my day.”

One of Mr. Cuomo’s longest examinations came when he came across a blue 1969 Corvette. The governor halted, puzzled, when he looked under the hood; the motor turned out to be the same kind used in some new Corvettes.

Several car enthusiasts said Mr. Cuomo proved his auto-buff chops through his questioning. Studying the souped-up Corvette, Mr. Cuomo noticed that the motor had been fitted with different-looking fuel injection tubes and valve covers — carbon fiber parts, he observed, accurately, said Chris Tucci, 46, whose car restoration company in Lindenhurst installed the new motor.

Mr. Tucci said he got a kick out of seeing the governor inspect his handiwork.

“It’d be cooler if he’d lower my taxes,” he said, “but, yeah, it’s pretty cool.”

Auto Special: Benz's four new cars hit Chengdu Motor Show - China Daily

Auto Special: Benz's four new cars hit Chengdu Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz top executives join the Chinese movie star at the Chengdu Motor Show 2011 (from left): Cai Gongming, Vice President, Sales, Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd; Fu Qiang, Executive Vice-president, Sales & Marketing, for Beijing Benz Automotive Company; Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd brand ambassador Fan Bingbing; Bjrn Hauber, Executive Vice-president, Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd; Gary Wong, Vice President, Head of Region South, Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd; Lutz Regelmann, Vice President Product Management; Stefan Herbert, Head of smart, Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd. Provided to China Daily

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a star-studded lineup at the Chengdu Motor Show 2011, in Sichuan province, with an impressive display of 27 models, which, the company reports, had an impressive impact.

Its newly designed, 1,800-square-meter booth had four brands on display: Mercedes-Benz, smart, AMG and Maybach.

Highlights of the launch were the E 300 L Elegance, the new SLK roadster, the smart kobe edition, and the GL 450 4MATIC Exclusive Grand Edition.

Its locally produced Long-wheel-base E 300 L Elegance, the latest addition to the E-Class, is equipped with many new popular features and is competitively priced at 596,000 yuan ($93,274). This, Benz said, perfectly encapsulates the concept of "The Best in its Class".

Then there is the strikingly masculine design of the new Mercedes-Benz SLK, with a wealth of technical innovations and class-leading efficiency. This takes driving enjoyment and open-air fun to a new level, with the SLK 200 Style, priced at 608,000 yuan, the SLK 200 Luxury Sports, at 698,000 yuan, and the SLK 350, at 938,000 yuan.

The limited edition smart kobe is tailor-made - with smart's China brand-ambassador Kobe Bryant in mind - thus highlighting its smart sports genes, with a price tag of 124,000 yuan.

The GL 450 4MATIC Exclusive Grand Edition has a distinctive design and stylish interior, and is now available at 1,598,000 yuan.

The appearance of these four new models at the Chengdu show demonstrates the importance Mercedes-Benz places on Chengdu and the Southwest. At the same time it strengthens Benz's product portfolio to maintain its growth momentum in China.

"Mercedes-Benz continues to have steady growth in China, with solid sales in the first eight months of the year, and deliveries of nearly 123,590 units, for a year-on-year increase of 41 percent," said Bjrn Hauber, executive vice-president of Sales & Marketing for Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd.

"To maintain this growth momentum, we'll continue to enrich and strengthen our portfolio with more fascinating models on offer for Chinese customers. And, through further cooperation with the Beijing Benz Automotive Co, there will be greater market synergy in our resource alignment for long-term development of Mercedes-Benz in China," Hauber added.

Fu Qiang, executive vice-president of Sales & Marketing for Beijing Benz Automotive, went on to say, "By increasing cooperation, we'll further consolidate both company's knowledge and experience to tap the huge market potential. And, by providing the best service, we'll bring guaranteed benefits to every one of our customers.

"The appearance today of the competitively priced, Long-wheel-base E 300 L Elegance improves the E-Class sedan line-up - which is 'The Best in its Class' - to meet the needs of this diverse group of customers."

The Mercedes-Benz Long-wheel-base E-Class brings a premium driving experience, as well as a safe, comfortable and relaxing ride. It is perfect for just driving around - or being driven in. It is also ideal for both business and pleasure and can be seen as a lifetime partner, equally suited to the business elite, young modern elite, or families.

The E 300 L Elegance carries its family traits and comes with a host of popular features. This luxury sedan comes with a V6 engine and a 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission, bringing great power with a smooth drive.

The visitors were stunned when the movie star Fan Bingbing appeared on stage in the all-new Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster. Bingbing is also a brand-ambassador, one who perfectly embodies the beauty, fashion, and charm of the SLK, which is widely acknowledged by car enthusiasts to be one of the most exciting sports cars in the world.

The new SLK has already received an immense amount of media attention after its Asian debut at Auto Shanghai. The car's striking design combines a kind of light-footed sportiness with a perfectly proportioned, yet more aggressively masculine body.

One highlight of both the SLK 200 Luxury Sport and the SLK 350 is the panoramic vario-roof, with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which can quickly switch to light or dark at the push of a button.

Making a major appearance at the Chengdu Motor Show was smart's latest addition to its varied lineup - the tailor-made smart kobe edition - which is sure to bring a new wave of "smart fever" to the city.

At the "smart & Kobe 24h" event, in Shanghai towards the end of July, the basketball star expressed a desire to have his own element added to personalize a smart car, as a special gift to his fans and smart-lovers in China.

The smart kobe edition has made his wish come true, with a predominantly black exterior, accented by an element of Kobe on the tridion safety cell. It calls to mind the basketball icon's nickname, "Black Mamba", and symbolizes the speed and power of both Kobe and smart.

Another exciting model launched in Chengdu is the Mercedes-Benz GL 450 4MATIC Exclusive Grand Edition. Its distinctive design for the front-end has unmistakable, dark-tinted black headlamps and high-gloss louvres that accent the radiator grille.

The new C-Class generation, which originally appeared in July, was also on display at the show, with its dynamic, elegant design, outstanding agility, high comfort standards, and advanced safety technology. This new generation has more than 2,000 new components that set it apart from its predecessor. It is also a leader in its segment and brings the customer agility, safety and comfort all in one.

There was also a 'surprise guest' at the show, Mercedes-Benz's exciting new SLS AMG GT3, which got a great deal f attention from sports car fans. It was developed from the iconic gull-wing model, in compliance with the near-series FIA GT3 rulebook, as high-performance super sports car designed for races.

And, last but not least, the Maybach, whose largest global market is now in China and has been since this past January. This is the ultimate in luxury saloon and was represented at the show by the Maybach 62. The elegant exterior, luxurious interior, and cutting-edge infotainment, combined with excellent, personalized service, ensure that Maybach stands at the pinnacle of luxury.

In the first eight months of this year, Maybach sales grew 215 percent, over the same period last year, increasing its market share from 2010's 15.7 percent to 28.9 percent.

The S-Class, R-Class, new generation C-Class Estate, B-Class, and A-Class were all elegantly on display at the Chengdu Motor Show, along with the SUV family, consisting of the G-Class, ML-Class and the GLK.

The entire glamorous lineup clearly demonstrates Mercedes-Benz's determination to satisfy the needs of its most discerning customers and reinforces its commitment to the China market in the Southwest and elsewhere.

Toyota, FAW Developing Electric Car Sub-brand for China - EV World

Although GM, Nissan, Honda, VW and now Hyundai have jumped on the sub brand bandwagon with gusto, Toyota have steadily refused to comment or deny on any plans they have for a new brand from their partner First Automobile Works. Of course in some interviews Toyota executives have made subtle hints at a sub brand for the Chinese market but nothing concrete has come forward so far, only denials regarding the plans. However, Auto.Sohu.com have released these pictures of what is being called FAW-Toyota’s first self developed car, a lack of exhaust pipes are indicating that this car is an electric vehicle.

Foreign automakers quickly realized that they were going to be left out of the electric car race in China, with subsidies only being made to new energy vehicles being made in China foreign companies can either produce their cars locally or they can import them and hope to sell at a premium. Toyota does sell the Prius in China but it has not been a big hit for the company, and further more the generous subsidies that are available for other new energy vehicles (up to 60,000rmb) clearly indicated that Toyota was in no position to seriously develop that area of the market.

Tulsa police shop for new cars after Ford drops the Crown Vic - KRMG

TULSA, Okla. —

Last Thursday, the very last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off an assembly line in Canada.

The demise of the fabled "Crown Vic" means police departments and taxi companies all over the U.S., and indeed around the world, will have to consider how to replace aged and aging vehicles.

The Tulsa Police Department is no exception.  TPD has relied heavily on the Crown Vic for 15 years, according to Cpl. Dan Ward, the department's driving coordinator.

Now that it's no longer an option, how will the department decide what to buy next?

Ward says there are several considerations. Safety, of course, and performance. Price, as well as fuel and maintenance costs. Also, size -- the department has purchased Dodge Chargers as well in recent years, but Ward says they've heard some complaints that the Chargers are too small.

An officer carries a lot of equipment, including weapons, computers, report forms, safety equipment, etc. A smaller vehicle often gets cramped, Ward says.

The department bought several 2011 Crown Vics, so administrators don't feel like they need to rush into any decisions. They're doing their homework, testing new vehicles and comparing them to one another.

Here are some of the models TPD may consider purchasing in the near future:

Ford is replacing the Crown Vic with a model it has dubbed the Ford Police Interceptor. It's basically a Taurus, with a 365-horsepower twin-turbo V-6.  One issue with the FPI is it doesn't offer rear-wheel drive, and police officers love the "bootleg turn," which requires a rear-wheel drive vehicle to perform.

Dodge has its Charger, and as mentioned, TPD has purchased them previously. The company plans to revamp the Charger, adding improvements to the chassis and powertrain, as well as a more efficient engine. One model will feature the Hemi V-8 engine.

Chevrolet's offering for 2012 is the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle. That resurrects a nameplate not seen on an assembly line since 1996. It will come with a 355-horsepower 6-liter V-8, with an option to go to the more fuel-efficient V-6. Chevy says it has relocated some of the radio gear to the trunk, and specially designed seats to accomodate an officer's holster belt and its equipment.

And then, there's the new kid on the block: The Carbon Motors E7. The first vehicle ever designed from the ground up specifically as a police vehicle, it is a high-tech, state-of-the-art vehicle that's so cutting-edge it hasn't even actually become available yet.

The Carbon E7 is designed to incorporate the wish lists of working police officers. It will be a foot shorter than the Crown Vic, but the wheelbase is longer, providing more interior space.

It will offer some 21st Century features as well, including a rear set fitted with sensors capable of detecting biological, chemical, and radioactive threats.

The problems with the E7 are basically twofold: It will be quite expensive, and the company hasn't begun building the cars yet. It hopes to have them in production within the next couple of years.

Ward says TPD has looked at the E7, but in the current economic times, he thinks it more likely that the department will stay with a more traditional vehicle.

Ford Builds it has the First Three-Cylinder Engine - Autos

Ford Motor Co. will start off building more compact applications therefore to their compact cars. They are generally aimed at shrinking powertrains to enhance fuel efficiency. They could make his or her smallest engine yet, a three-cylinder engine. The different engine shall be placed into this Fiesta along with Focus, and can have power expenditure equal to or even as good as Fords four-cylinder engines.

Vice chief executive connected with powertrain engineering, Joe Bakaj, explained, Customers may not be truly checking the amount of cylinders or maybe the actual displacement anymore. He defined that Ford has attained fuel overall economy enhancement regarding thirty percent with the addition of direct-injection technology in which feeds precise amounts connected with propane to cylinders inside lesser engines. Ford features similar pursuits using the particular new, small engine. Bakaj says, No ones at any time developed a three-cylinder motor quite similar to this. Not only will it be one of several a lot of officially advanced and also useful engines weve ever before designed, however it will probably propose quite a few new technology towards the Ford website lineup.

The Chief Executive Officer, Alan Mulally, may be adding an importance with fuel economy. Ford cases of which it will likely be the greatest maker with amalgam transmissions by spring and coil with 2012 right after it begins output within a manufacturing plant near Detroit after this particular year. Ford as well proclaimed make include formulated your cross transmission and also a strong eight-speed intelligent transmission. The brand-new eight-speed transmission could improve supply overall economy by simply about 6 mile after mile every gallon. Ford will certainly always acquire electric in addition to hybrid vehicles which could be the reason for as much as 25 percent of the revenue by means of 2020 seeing that regulators from the U.S. are developing regulations put on involve organizations to own an average fuel economy of 62 mpg by means of 2025.

Ford exhibited some it has the brand-new cars in the Detroit auto indicate such as some sort of Focus Electric lightweight car, a C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, as well as a C-Max Hybrid gas-electric wagon. The 2012 C-Max can chair up to seven people plus offers minivan-style sliding rear-side doors. It may be centric through whether 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant or maybe a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor which yields 168 horsepower on frequent fuel and 180 horsepower on high quality gas. It as well has an distinctive hands-free tailgate. There is a sensor less than the particular rear bumper that enables the new driver to be able to swipe their particular leg under the bumper to help open the tail gate as long as one of the keys fob will be their own bank account or purse. Ford Fiesta S1600

£15,900 Driven August 2011

Rated 13 out of 20

Peel back the stripes on this Fiesta S1600, and you'll find a mildly heated Zetec S. Unlike last year's version, which was simply a colourful restyle, this one has added fastness, and should fill a hole in the range before the mooted 180bhp ST arrives.

A standard Fiesta is one of those everyday Fords that feels a bit special, as if someone who really likes driving spent a night tweaking the blueprints. Painting two lines over the roof brings out its playful side, and boosting power from 120bhp to 132 gives it a welcome energy shot. That doesn't sound much, but combined with a longer first gear, it drops the 0-62mph time from 9.9secs to 8.2.

The extra power comes from a remapped brain, a new air filter, reduced back pressure thanks to wider pipes that also give a rally-car rasp. Outside, you can have white stripes on blue paint or the other way around, plus 17in white alloys, a front splitter, extended side skirts, a fake rear diffuser and twin chrome pipes. Inside, there are full leather seats, plus other blue 'n' black highlights.

Just 500 will be made, costing £15,900 - that's £1,500 more than a Zetec S. And worth it, for the extra speed alone.

Infiniti M35h car review

£46,840 Driven September 2011

Rated 13 out of 20

The standard M-series (3.0D or 3.7-litre V6) always suffer comparison with more mainstream competition. But this hybrid M35h is different. It embraces its weirdness, and isolates itself from unfavourable comparison in a little bubble of odd.

It's the usual hybrid stuff: a 300bhp-ish 3.5-litre V6 mated to seven-speed auto and a 68bhp electric motor for extra shove, equipped with stop/start for in-town and coasting-engine narcolepsy. It runs pure EV when pottering, and is silently, eerily fast (0-62mph in 5.5, 155mph top end). A limo with 40+mpg and 162g/km. And it's so quiet. And relaxing. After a hard day, it's like a rolling Nurofen.

By all the usual accounting, the M35h is supposed to be an interesting aside but an evolutionary dead-end, like an amusing four-wheeled dodo. But it works spectacularly well in certain situations, neatly obliterating some of the irritating faults of the mainstream versions. In fact, TG knows it should deride the M35h.

It's ugly, weird, complicated, expensive at just under £47k, and has the brand recognition of a piece of white A4 paper. But it's also relaxing, unobtrusive, indecently rapid and... different. We shouldn't like it quite so much. But we do.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S

£122,623 Driven September 2011

Rated 12 out of 20

The one thing the Porsche Panamera Turbo did not need was more speed. A bit of a rethink on the design, yes; even a bit of work on the way it drives, but an upgrade from 493bhp? A quicker 0-62mph time than 4.0secs? Unusually, TopGear finds itself thinking that Porsche had more urgent matters to attend to than making the Panamera go faster.

But more power is cheap to come by. You just have a fiddle with that clever bit of electronics that controls the engine and, Gunter's your onkel, an extra 50bhp. Only Porsche didn't do it the cheap way.

What it did was fit new turbos. I ought to be more specific, actually, because the outer casings are the same, it's the little spinny things inside (known as impellers) that are new. Now this is very technical, but it's important, so stay with me. The spinny things are now made of an aluminium/titanium blend that means they only weigh half as much as the old ones (50 grammes instead of 100), and this has several advantages - chiefly that they work more efficiently and respond faster. Porsche has actually measured this - they now spin from rest to 170,000rpm in 0.8 of a second instead of 1.2 seconds.

They also help to deliver an extra 49bhp and 22lb ft of torque, which is justification enough for sticking that S badge on the back. So is this - for an extra £20k or thereabouts over a standard Turbo - a fundamentally different, and better, car?

No. It's just about possible to detect some extra urgency as the turbo boost floods in, and the Panamera is capable of remarkable feats of acceleration, either when jetting out of a second gear hairpin, or blasting past slower stuff on the autobahn. The combo of 4wd, PDK gearbox and plentiful acronyms (PDCC, PTV, PTM, PSM and PASM are all standard) make this a tremendously effective car for getting four people somewhere in a great hurry.

That's how the Panamera likes to be driven, too. It likes to go places in a hurry - it's as if it feels important doing that, so takes charge of the situation, relegating the driver to the role of hanger-on. This isn't much fun, especially as the Turbo S, like all Panameras, proves to have a puzzling ride that shimmies across rough roads. It also always feels big and a touch blunt - like trying to steer a particularly energetic basking shark.

Speed. Speed is what the Panamera Turbo S does well. That's its party trick, its whole reason for being. It's just a shame that Porsche didn't turn its attention to the rest of the car at the same time.

Lotus Evora IPS

£51,400 Driven September 2011

Rated 12 out of 20

The UK isn't thought of as being particularly obsessed with automatic sports cars. But you can't buy a Ferrari with a manual box anymore, and even 40 per cent of Porsche 911s sold over here are automatics. In somewhere like the States, nearly 100 per cent of sports cars are self-shifters. So Lotus fitting an automatic to the Evora shouldn't come as that much of a shock, even if the last time it fitted one to a car, Maggie Thatcher was in power and blazers with folded sleeves were considered hip.

Welcome to the Evora Intelligent Precision Shift, then - yours for £1,800 (plus £49,600 for the actual car). Because Lotus uses Toyota engines - a 3.5-litre V6, in this case - it also uses a Toyota torque-convertor gearbox. Not only do they work well together, but reliability will never be an issue. As ever, Lotus has tweaked the electrics in this six-speed, so it bears little resemblance to anything you'll have driven in your Camry hire car in the USA.

The main thing that's been altered is the Transmission Control Unit. In other words, how the gearbox actually decides which gear is required and when is now much sportier. Even in normal ‘D' mode, there is a gear-hold function, so there shouldn't be any mid-corner lurch because the gearbox knows you're in a twisty bit and won't shift up. The changes themselves have also been made more aggressive, so you can really feel when the auto is swapping gears.

Which is great in theory, less so in practice. ‘D' needs to be more comfort-orientated, and the box should be more anonymous - that's the whole point of an auto. The Evora lurches between each downchange, and you end up with nodding head syndrome. And despite all the gear-hold stuff, the IPS still hunts between cogs too much when you're trying to get a move on.

Press ‘Sport', and things start to make more sense. Pull the rubberised paddles, and you'll switch it into full manual mode, so even if you rev it to the limiter, it won't shift up. Ironically for an auto, this is where this box works best.

Overall, though, what's impressive is the gearbox doesn't feel out of place in the Evora. It makes the car feel quicker, as you're in the meaty part of the power curve more often, and it doesn't matter that it's a torque-convertor and not a fancy double-clutch gearbox, because there's definitely Lotus DNA here.

But we'd still get the manual box. There are some cars in the world that no self-respecting car fan should ever get with an auto. And the Evora is one of them.

Nissan Micra car review

£11,000 Driven September 2011

Rated 7 out of 20

The new Micra has been widely ignored by the likes of us. But are you surprised? It looks older than, well, the old one. Climb in, and you're faced with dashboard furniture of the sort of cheapo hard plastic last seen in the Citroen Saxo. Before you so much as start the engine, you're flogging a horse that, if not actually dead, is close to terminally infirm.

But, intriguingly, they've now added a slinky supercharged engine. It has three cylinders, some sophisticated anti-friction measures, direct injection and the ability to run in the Miller combustion cycle, all of which make it properly economical at a dawdle. When you floor it, the valves go to conventional Otto timing and the supercharger kicks in.

Result is 95g/km emissions and 69mpg economy, but a worthwhile 98bhp in a light car. That means diesel-like economy at a cheaper price, and the sweet-revving nature of a petrol. Similar promise to the Fiat TwinAir, you'll have spotted.

This is an economy supermini, but it's not a total slug, and the supercharged mode kicks smoothly into action with no lag, burbling happily away in that thrummy vibe of a Smart or (with a big stretch of the imagination) half a 911. The chassis is chirpy enough too, happy to be chucked through urban chicanery, but reasonably placid over bumps.

Hmmm, time for a sandwich. Nice bit of cold roast beef, some tangy horseradish sauce, couple of slices of tomato straight out of the greenhouse. Ah, but... it's wrapped in a couple of slices of week-old bread, corners turning up, mould taking hold. Still, you can always eat the filling and chuck away the bread. At least you'd be halfway to a lunch. With the Micra DIG-S,the high-tech engine and perky dynamics are all very well, but you can't have them without the mouldy-bread bodywork.

We'll pass. There are other interesting little engines out there, and they come in more alluring little cars: the TwinAir in the Fiat 500 (and soon the Chrysler Ypsilon), or the Twingo 100 TCE.

Not that Nissan cares what I think. The Micra's British mission is to be abused by driving-school learners or bimbled to the village hall by OAPs. The new one will carry on that tradition. The reason it looks so bulbous and feels so cheap is that it's built in India for people who don't have the income to be as snooty as we are; they need the Micra to enclose the maximum possible space for the minimum possible price.

Volkswagen Beetle car review

£25,000 Driven September 2011

Rated 11 out of 20

Say hello to the brand new Volkswagen Beetle.

Actually, sorry, we need to pause here. A moment of explanation is required. This is the new Beetle, but then the last car was also called the New Beetle, and you can't very well have the New New Beetle. So instead, VW has dubbed this The Beetle. Oh, and the original is just Beetle. Excellent, glad that's all cleared up.

Truth be told, the last-gen Beetle is the elephant in the room where this Beetle is concerned - Volkswagen is well aware that car enthusiasts like us thought it was a monstrosity of retro kitsch, all flower vases and bubbles, without any real substance. Hence the reason that although it sold well - over a million cars in 13 years - it was never that loved. We were shown a video of 73 years of the Beetle, and the last one flashed up for just a single second.

Volkswagen is hoping the new new one will change that. It wants a sportier Beetle, one with some sound engineering behind the still-cutesy looks. As such, the range of engines available is bang up-to-date and covers everything from the excellent 1.2-litre TSI to the car we tested, the £25,000 2.0-litre TFSI, via a 1.6-litre diesel. The chassis underneath is largely the same as the Golf - top-spec Beetles get Ford Focus-esque multi-link rear suspension with an electronic differential for the driven axle, but the lower versions only get a torsion beam set-up.

Equally, even the looks have been hardened up. Gone is the triple-bubble look of the previous New Beetle - this one is wider (by 84mm) and longer (by 152mm) but also lower (by 12mm), which gives the car a much squatter stance. VW has also flattened the roof and made the windscreen much more upright - not only does this follow the original Beetle more closely, but also means rear headroom is much better.

Individualisation is also possible, just like in the Mini or Fiat 500, so customers can ‘name' their own car. In other words, you can choose which rear badge you get. In the UK, this means you're restricted to Beetle, Volkswagen or Turbo - about as individual as a farmer owning a Labrador. However, you need to push your dealer to let you have the Japanese script. VW tells us this is technically possible, and the wonderfully graphic Japanese letters are far cooler than the standard UK choices.

Jump inside, and there are nods to retro. Our car was a top-of-the-line ‘Sport', so had carbon-fibre-effect dash trim and smart piano-black plastics along the top of the doors, but if you opt for the ‘Beetle' or ‘Design' specs, the cars come with body-coloured plastics - just as slick. Equally, the steering wheel is lovely and thin, just like it should be on a car harking back to the days of wooden rims.

But the interior is by no means perfect. The modern VW switches look at odds with the retro stuff, and there are still crap nostalgic touches, such as the flip-up glovebox. This is utterly useless because it's very shallow - it has to have the airbag behind it. Worse, it feels flimsy. In fact, there are far too many areas of cheap, hard plastic in here - customers expecting the usual Volkswagen build quality should stick to the Golf.

As they should if they want decent ride. Despite our car being on normal suspension - the optional sport suspension is 15mm lower and even stiffer - the Beetle pattered over lumps and bumps far too much. It simply didn't feel as sophisticated as a Golf, despite having the same multi-link rear set-up.

Mind you, there's better news when it comes to the Beetle's handling, as it's just as good as the Golf now. You don't feel like you're driving a large blancmange anymore, because the Beetle has now got a wider track, front and rear, which helps grip levels and turn in. It's a sharper car - still not what you'd call a hot hatch, and no better than the similarly-priced Golf, but at least it's a bit more enthusiastic.

This car is so much better than the last-gen Beetle. It feels sportier andit is good fun to drive - certainly more than most Beetle owners would want or need. We drove the range-topping 2.0-litre TFSI, an engine shared with the Golf GTI, and it certainly gives enough power. It's been detuned for this car - VW doesn't want it to match the halo GTI - so here has 197bhp and 206lb ft. But the headline 0-62mph only takes 7.5 seconds (0.6 seconds off the GTI) and, with the DSG gearbox, you never drop out of the turbo zone. Oddly, though, that DSG gearbox option doesn't come with any paddles behind the steering wheel - manual changes have to be done via the gearlever, which feels a bit strange. There will also be a range of smaller motors available, which we suspect might be the pick of the bunch, matching power and price more keenly.

Truth be told, then, The Beetle is much better than New Beetle. But then that's not difficult - it's a bit like saying petrol is better than steam. Where you would have to have been classified insane to buy the old car, this one does make a decent case for itself. But more so at the modest end of the car's price range. The competition at £25,000 is too serious, not least among the rest of the VW Group. As ever with the Beetle, you'll be buying it for how it makes you feel, not because it's the best car for the money.

Maserati GranCabrio Sport

£102,615 Driven September 2011

Rated 14 out of 20

It's called the GranCabrio Sport. Which sums it up neatly. A convertible version of the Maserati GranTurismo - the GranCabrio - with added Sport. But not that much added vitality: power is up just 10bhp to 450, torque from 361lb ft to 376lb ft, top speed a single mile-per-hour to 177mph and 0-62mph down 0.1 of a second to 5.2. Which isn't enough to feel in a 1,980kg car, unless you have digital read-outs in place of buttocks.

What you're more likely to feel is the new MC Sport Shift Auto gearbox with its new, longer Trofeo-esque paddles mounted to the steering column. Tweaked to make better use of the rev-range of the 4.7-litre V8 - it revs 500rpm higher than the standard GranCabrio - the revised 'box is 50 per cent faster to swap gears in Sport mode and holds gears in manual even when it reaches the rev-limiter. Which is nice, because it allows you to play tunes with the engine note, just slightly more extraordinary than the standard GranCabrio, thanks to a more vocal exhaust - the sexy one featuring black oval tips.

There are a few styling tweak-ettes too - not much, you understand - just enough to gain the upper hand in the GranCabrio debate. So you get little aero-dividing winglets on the edges of the front bumper, some bespoke side-skirting, black-backed headlights and a black grille. It remains a properly pretty car, even with the roof up. A canvas roof that can be stowed or retracted up to 20mph, although you'd best have some space, because it takes a glacial 28secs.

Is it better than a standard GranCabrio? Yes. A bit. The gearbox is still a torque-converted automatic, so is able to diffidently wander around being all plush and comforting, and the suspension is firm but not back-breaking. It's a fabulous posing car. Go faster, and the cracks start to appear: it feels massively heavy, and in its pursuit of relaxed sportiness Maserati has inexplicably given the brake pedal a weird couple of inches of squishy nothing at the top of its travel, which is intensely annoying in the Sport version. When you finally get through the initial wool, the brakes are effective and progressive, but it still makes the GranCabrio Sport a little too fond of the odd lurch into a corner, unhelpfully shoved along by the car's general lard.

So the ‘Sport' part is a bit of a misnomer, and if you want a proper driving tool, you'd be better off with an Audi R8 cab. But the GranCabrio Sport only costs around £4,300-ish more than the standard car, and the exhaust and gearbox tweaks are probably worth that alone. So TG recommends the Maserati GranCabrio Sport as a pretty, rapid, awesomely noisy convertible. Just don't expect it to rewrite the rules of physics.

BMW 1-Series car review

£23,480 Driven September 2011

Rated 14 out of 20

It's not often you get to start a piece on a new car with such a bald question, but what is the BMW 1-Series actually for? Yes, it's sold over a million units since it arrived in 2005, so somebody out there obviously likes it. On the other hand, with the best will in the world, it's always been a bit of an ugly spud, with a compromised profile and wonky detailing (brilliantly chunky 1 M Coupe apart). While we clearly approve of its rear-drive set-up for dynamic reasons, we're also rather attached to our legs, and no amount of bribery would induce anyone of above-average height to sit in the back of a 1-Series for longer than was strictly necessary.

This all-new model addresses some of these fundamental problems, while taking BMW's laudable drive for efficiency to impressive new levels. Let's start with some numbers. The new car is 85mm longer than the old one, its wheelbase has grown by 30mm - most of which is donated to the cause of rear legroom - and the front and rear track have also been widened. Boot capacity is 30 litres bigger, too.

Few cars these days, it seems, are immune from dimensional inflation, but in the 1's case that's no bad thing (maybe there'll be a BMW 0.5-Series before long). Despite all this expansion, it's 30kg lighter than before, and its torsional rigidity is improved by almost a third. It's not a whole lot better-looking, though. Now I'm a champion of the different, and a bigger fan of BMW's complex design language than most of my Top Gear colleagues. The latest 5-Series, for example, is a toweringly good piece of work. But the new 1 looks to the 5-Series GT for visual inspiration instead, which is a bit like asking Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's child-catcher for parenting tips. Bigger lights, enlarged forward-leaning double kidney grille, three-section air intake, with four distinct contour lines to add some visual tension: it's all going on, but rather than looking sporty, the new 1 merely looks like a car that's just discovered that its phone's been hacked. There's some clever sculpture on the body-sides, but quite simply the current Golf GTI is better-looking.

Anyway. The technology's the thing here. Exclusively turbocharged (TwinPower in BMW parlance), the 1 lands in the UK next month with a choice of five engines: 135 or 168bhp direct injection, twin-scroll turboed 116i or 118i petrols, and no fewer than three 2.0-litre common-rail diesels, in 116, 143 or 184bhp degrees of, if not hotness exactly, then tepidity.

You could probably write a thesis on EfficientDynamics, but in the new 1-Series let's just say that BMW's eco-tech manifesto may have come of age. An ultra-green 116d ED is coming soon, with claimed CO2 emissions of 99g/km and a combined average of 74mpg, but even the pokiest 120d serves up a decent slab of cake and invites you to eat it. Apparently, it'll do 60mph in just over seven seconds and tops out at 140mph, but emits just 119g/km, and - provided your right foot isn't permanently made of lead - should average around 60mpg.

That's on paper. Time to hit the road. BMW's smallest car now has a cabin that's on a par with its much bigger, pricier siblings. It's almost a decade since iDrive appeared in its brave but misfiring v1.0 incarnation, and, for my money, BMW's current multi-media system is easily the most elegant and user-friendly of the lot. Hard drive-based navigation and 12-speaker Harman/Kardon hi-fi with DAB and a digital amplifier are all brilliant if pricey options, but even a parched 1-Series is a handsome place to be. Good materials, great driving position and some decent design flourishes. I love the interior doorhandles, and the cup-holder recesses in the base of the doors are cleverly designed and spacious. Here, at least, it kicks a Golf or A3 into touch.

It gets better. As with the previous 1, this might be a small BMW, but the bits underneath are very grown-up. The suspension is independent all-round, with MacPherson struts on the front and a sophisticated five-link axle at the rear. The front axle is mostly aluminium, which reduces unsprung mass, and the suspension's kinematics have all been sharpened. You can tell immediately. A veteran of numerous ruinously run-flat-clad BMWs, I actually got out after 10 minutes to double-check that TG's test car was actually on them and that my arse wasn't lying to me. It's still firm enough, don't get me wrong, but it filters out the worst that the UK's beaten roads can chuck at it while maintaining a decent entertainment focus.

The new car also features a ‘driving experience switch' as standard, allowing you to flick between Comfort, Sport or Eco Pro, each remapping the engine, tweaking the DSC threshold and altering the shift points of the ZF eight-speed automatic (an option, but it's such a good transmission we'd recommend it). There's also an optional adaptive suspension, which is 10mm lower than the regularly sprung car, but the message here is of ‘enhanced comfort' above all else. So don't bother with it. That said, die-hard BMW fans will be pleased to hear that this small diesel hatchback will go sideways with little provocation, if that's your bag. Everyone else will enjoy an electro-mechanical steering rack that guarantees pleasing fluidity and body control that rewards what whiskery old road-testers used to call ‘press-on' driving.

I like this car a lot. Everyone still bangs on about BMW's peerless driving dynamics, but the fact is that the Munich legend means something different these days. The 120d is one of the most energetic diesels I've ever driven, its auto 'box is terrific, and it's so clean I'd dearly like to drive it into eco-man George Monbiot's Toyota Prius. So that's what it's for.

Jason Barlow

We like: It's fast, fun and clean
We don't like: It still looks a bit funny
The verdict: Not gut-punchingly desirable, but now more rational than ever.
Performance: 0-62mph in 7.2secs, max 142mph, 62.7mpg
Tech: 1995cc, 4cyl, RWD, 184bhp, 280lb ft, 1420kg, 119g/km CO2
Tick this on the options list: H/K stereo & DAB digital radio, £875
And avoid this: rear-seat: iPad dock, £tbc
